Gumbis

Hi Alex, sorry for my late reply, I am in the middle of the trade show season, so I am out of office and very busy during the day on location, and traveling in between. But I will try to explain the build up of the prices as clear as possible, as I believe in transparency in my business towards my customer. Let me give you a run down of the BDD prices first, before I make the comparison with the brands you buy, and especially the way you get them. I am very happy that you already make the comparison with brands like PBJ, Samurai and Momotaro, as my jeans are in fact produced in the very same factory as Momotaro. So quality wise they are basically the same. A big difference however can be found in small details, that add up to the costs, such as the labels being stitched in on the waistband invisible on the outside, fully lined backpockets, 7 different yarns (colour and thickness), the extra hidden pocket etc. A lot more small extra's, which altogether add up to the final price. Then, BDD jeans are produced in in small quantities, and then exported to the Netherlands, where I am based. This means a reasonably high amount of shipping costs, but the biggest additional cost factor are import duties, which are 12% from goods outside of the European Union. The retail prices are then mirrored to the prices of Momotaro in the Netherlands (Eur 289), and prices of PBJ and Samurai even exceed the Eur 300 mark here. This has all to do with those damn import duties. Now, when we compare it with the prices you pay for them, there are a few notes to make. First of all, you buy them directly from the source, which is Japan. VAT in Japan is only 8%, compared to 21% in the Netherlands. On a pair of Eur 200 jeans, that is already a difference of Eur 20. The VAT in the rest of the EU is also around the 20%, so that already makes a huge difference. Secondly, I don't know the exact conditions from these shops sending you the jeans directly from source, but I can imagine they mark the value low to avoid import fees. This is of course illegal . But normally you should pay some import fees in addition to the base price + shipping costs. Adding up all these, this explains the price difference. I understand that with my current setup, and therefore price build up, costs can be quite high for customers in USA and Canada (I quickly checked your profile to see where you are from, if you don't mind). I am also looking into a way of sending goods directly from Japan to customers outside of the EU, which probably saves you between 15% and 18% of the final price, and can therefore be quite interesting, but I am still working on that as I am still a very small brand, and do basically all by myself! Hope all is a bit more clear and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Best rgds, Lennaert
