The movement itself is ordered in it's individual parts which separates Breitling from Omega, Omega receive their movements already assembled and uniquely modified by ETA. Omega does not use the ETA 2824-2 and heavily modifies it's versions of the slightly slimmer and less robust ETA 2892-A2 (Omega caliber 1120, non-co axial, has a bigger balance wheel and extensive modifications regarding the winding mechanism which brings the total number of jewels to 23. The Omega caliber 2500, co-axial, is even more modified with, for instance, a free-sprung balance and a co-axial escapement). Breitling is also not a traditional "manufacture" like Omega (which nowadays manufacture an increasing number of "manufacture calibers" developed and manufactured entirely in-house).
ETA movements are manufactured in four different levels when it comes to quality, precision, decoration and so on. Breitling only uses the highest level, "Chronometrie", and the movements are assembled on the Breitling premises at Breitling Chronometrie. Ever since the acquisition of Kelek in 1997, the quality of Breitling movements have increased dramatically. The Breitling caliber 17 is nowadays nicely decorated with "Cote's de Geneva" and "perlage" (cloud-pattern engraving) and, of course, also chronometer certified by the COSC. It is a movement of the highest possible quality but let's not forget that just ten years ago, the movements were delivered unadorned by ETA and placed in watch cases without undergoing any additional fine processing (only slighty fine-tuned and totally without any decorations whatsoever). Breitling has come a long way when it comes to the movement's the company uses and nowadays they're all of extremely high quality.
Even though the Breitling caliber 17 is not modified in any extension and less technically attractive than competitors like the Omega caliber 2500, it is still a movement with unparallelled endurance and robustness. It is built like a tractor, durable like no other movement and because it is going through just the right hands at Breitling Chronometrie, it is also tuned to perfection and extensively decorated. If I was to choose a movement that I knew would provide me with excellent time-keeping for years on end, it would be the Breitling caliber 17. This movement is simply indestructible and an excellent choice for the divers watches within the Breitling Aeromarine-collection.
