Time for new talents: “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking graduation ceremonies
A new generation of watchmakers celebrates completion of studies

The future for the Saxon watchmaking art could not look brighter: on Thursday, July 2016, 21 young watchmakers received their diplomas from the Management of Glashütte Original, and the instructors of the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking. Following the successful completion of their training at the manufactory's own training institute, the newly minted graduates will start their work right away at Glashütte Original, helping to secure the future of this centuries-old art.

Thursday, 7 July 2016 at the Saxon manufactory was dedicated entirely to 21 young men and women, students at the firm's own “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking, who received their diplomas in the atrium of the manufactory and celebrated the completion of their studies. Family members, representatives of Glashütte Original, instructors and former students had gathered at the manufactory for the great occasion and congratulated the newly-minted watchmakers on their success. The following day saw the majority of the graduates already on the job in the various departments at Glashütte Original, where they will put their hard-earned knowledge to work immediately in the renowned watchmaker's watch assembly, production and customer service areas, and take their first steps in their professional lives alongside experienced colleagues.

The course of studies at the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking

This year's graduates have already provided ample evidence of their talent and exceptional manual dexterity during the three years of their training. Every year since 2001 the Saxon manufactory has begun training new watchmakers and toolmakers in the firm's own training institute. The modern and well-equipped “Alfred Helwig” watchmaking school offers students a first-class education as a craft specialist in watchmaking or toolmaking. The course of studies covers required theoretical knowledge and offers students useful insights into the day-to-day practice of watchmaking. During their studies they gain practical experience in selected areas of assembly and services at Glashütte Original. The watchmaker goes to great lengths to ensure that the training meets international standards; this is highlighted in particular by a cooperative agreement, unique in Germany, between the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking and Switzerland's “WOSTEP” (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program). As a result of this partnership, students who pass the WOSTEP final examination receive, in addition to their German Specialist Worker certificate, the WOSTEP diploma. In the context of the program the students are also given an opportunity to construct a so-called “training watch” – a project, as exciting as it is instructive, that allows the students to make realistic, practical use of theoretical knowledge.

Their time has come: on August 1, 2016, seventeen new apprentices began their training at Glashütte Original. Many different tasks and areas of study await them. Fourteen will learn the craft of watchmaking at the company’s own “Alfred Helwig” watchmaking school, and three begin their training as toolmakers. At present the manufactory is training more than 70 apprentices, thus nurturing a tradition that has deep roots in the history of Glashütte – that of handing down knowledge from generation to generation. The programme has been a great success: since training began 15 years ago, 188 talented young people have already earned their professional diplomas. The future of the art of watchmaking thus bears the unmistakable signature of Glashütte Original.

The new generation of Glashütte watch experts was warmly welcomed at a festive opening ceremony in the German Watch Museum. The directors of the watchmaking school and the Glashütte Original personnel department offered the young men and women, along with their best wishes, a taste of the training awaiting them: the freshly minted apprentices were given, along with their first tools, an opportunity to explore their future classrooms. The modern, well-equipped rooms offer the best possible conditions for an intensive education at the highest level; training lasts three years for the watchmakers and three and a half for the toolmakers.
The curriculum combines past and future, Saxon traditions and international standards. Studies include several periods of practical training in selected areas of the manufactory, providing the young people an opportunity to reinforce theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, and to apply, along with traditional craft techniques, today’s most advanced processes and procedures.

A long-standing partnership with the Swiss “WOSTEP” (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program) underscores the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking’s international connections. The agreement allows students who have completed their German training to earn, if they wish, a Swiss diploma as well.
The coming year will see Glashütte Original renew its openings for apprentice watchmakers and toolmakers. More detailed information about the curriculum and application procedures can be found on the company website (www.glashuette-original.com). The “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking invites all interested persons to attend an “open house” information day at the school on October 15, 2016. Representatives of the watchmaking school will also be present at the 23rd Education Action Day at the International Chamber of Commerce Dresden on September 24, 2016; at the third “Onkel Sax Education Fair” in Dresden on November 19, 2016; and at the “KarriereStart 2017” Education Fair set for January 20-22, 2017, at the Dresden Fair.

Brilliant prospects for the future of Saxon watchmaking: Thursday 6 July 2017 saw a new generation of watch experts celebrate the conclusion of their training at the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking. Glashütte Original management and teachers at the School awarded diplomas to this year's 23 proud graduates of the manufactory's own
training institute. Nineteen of the new graduates have learned the traditional craft of watchmaking, and another four now begin their careers as precision toolmakers.

The Saxon watch manufactory Glashütte Original dedicated Thursday July 6th, 2017 entirely to the next generation of watchmakers: in the atrium of the manufactory 23 graduates of the firm's “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking celebrated the successful conclusion of their three-year course of studies. Along with eight female and eleven male watchmakers, one female and three male toolmakers accepted congratulations from their families, friends, representatives of Glashütte Original, teachers and former students. The course of studies for the watchmakers lasted three years, for the toolmakers three and a half.

Training at the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking
This year's graduates have already provided ample evidence of their talent, exceptional manual dexterity and sense of tradition and innovations in their craft during their studies. Glashütte Original has been training watchmakers and toolmakers in its “Alfred Helwig” watchmaking school since 2001.
Students at the modern, well-equipped training institute acquire the very highest level of skills in these two tradition-rich professions. In the process, the teachers ensure that the students learn how to make the tiniest movement components, comprehend complex mechanical relationships and gain an appreciation of the effort, precision and value that the manufactory dedicates to even the minutest details. Along with theoretical knowledge, the curriculum offers a number of opportunities for students to gain insight into the practice of their trade. During their apprenticeship they participate in a variety of internships in selected assembly and customer service areas at the manufactory in Glashütte.
As a world-renowned watch brand, Glashütte Original places special emphasis on international standards of education in the field – a fact underscored by its partnership, unique in Germany, with the Swiss watchmaking school, WOSTEP (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program). Thanks to this arrangement students graduating from the “Alfred Helwig” School of Watchmaking may also sit the WOSTEP final exams and earn, in addition to the German skilled worker certificate, the WOSTEP diploma. As part of their training programme, students also have the opportunity to build a so-called “school watch” – a project as exciting as it is instructive, as it allows the students to apply their theoretical knowledge to the actual practice of watchmaking.
