Vacheron sale sets record for Christie's
October 19, 2007
New YorkChristie's Important Pocket Watches and Wristwatches auction in New York yielded nearly $5.4 million in sales, with a world record set on a vintage Vacheron Constantin wristwatch.
With $5,381,900 worth of goods sold, 80 percent were sold by lot and 83 percent were sold by value, according to a Christie's press release issued on Thursday.
The top lot, a rare vintage Vacheron Constantin wristwatch, Ref. 4293, set in 18-karat pink gold, brought in $457,000 from an anonymous buyer. Combining the complications of minute-repeating, triple calendar and phases of the moon, the timepiece was being touted as one of the most historically important Vacheron Constantin wristwatches to ever come to auction.
The watch inspired fevered bidding that ended with a contest between four telephone bidders in the United States and Europe, Christie's said in its release.
