It has just been announced that Lambda Weißgold from NOMOS Glashütte will receive the German Design Award. For the watchmaking company, it is the twelfth prize this year alone
Glashütte, October 2015. At NOMOS Glashütte we go to extremes of effort, which some might call crazy, to create the haute horlogerie timepiece Lambda: Every single gold watch is individually handcrafted in our dedicated Atelier in Glashütte. And yet, all this work pays off—as this latest prize proves once again: Following the NOMOS model Metro, now Lambda Weißgold is also due to receive the German Design Award, this time in the Gold category. This accolade is among the most significant design prizes worldwide and enjoys a prestigious reputation within expert circles and far beyond.
The model Lambda, which has already received numerous awards, won over the jury of the German Design Council with its timeless elegance and watchmaking finesse: The dial under the curved sapphire crystal glass is as delicate as an etching, held in place by an elegant case ring from 18 kt white gold. The NOMOS in-house caliber DUW 1001 at its heart ensures outstanding accuracy, and is graced with screwed gold chatons, a handengraved balance cock, swan neck fine adjustment, fine sunbeam polishing, and further characteristics of Glashütte fine watchmaking. “Lambda is a watch model that we have a particular soft spot for,” says Judith Borowski, head of design at NOMOS Glashütte. “An immense amount of work went into it; a highly talented group of designers—Professor Axel Kufus and Michael Paul, as well as Simon Husslein from Büro Hannes Wettstein— spent nearly four years working with NOMOS’ in-house design team on the form of this exceptional timepiece.”
The German Design Award is already the twelfth accolade for NOMOS Glashütte this year, and one of over 130 in total. To name just one example, the bestselling Metro model received the iF Product Award, the Red Dot Design Award, the Green Product Award and the Goldene Unruh in 2015.
