Universal Geneve Rises Again With Microtor Cabriolet Watch
In the fascinating history of automatic winding watch movement development, you have the
Universal Geneve watch company, whose microtor caliber set the stage for the development of similar micro-rotor movements which would come aftermost notably
Patek Philippes famous
240 Caliber (
click here to see superb images of a watch with this movement). While once-proud Universal Geneve for a time seemed consigned to memory, the 2008 year marks a happy reemergence of the brand upon the stage of luxury timepieces.
The Universal Geneve Microrotor Cabriolet which debuted at
Baselworld 2008 is a lovely timepiece, whose precisely engineered reversible case is every bit as cool as the
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. But, the most important thing is the triumphal return of an automatic movement manufactured by
Universal Geneve. Ticking inside the
Microtor Cabriolet is the proprietary
UG-101 caliber, whose unique off-centered gold micro-rotor and softly pulsing balance wheel can be admired, thanks to a figure-eight shaped display window.
Overall then, the
Microtor Cabriolet is a very solid re-introduction for
Universal Geneve, with a lot of mechanical authenticity. One can only hope that additional models will be forthcoming, and Universal Geneve can once again claim a place of prominence in Swiss watchmaking. Ill raise my glass to that!
